Prof. Corena de Beer

Biography :

I am an Associate Professor and Principal Medical Scientist in Medical Virology at Stellenbosch University and the National Health Laboratory Service at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. My main research interests include paediatric virology, forensic medicine, infectious diseases, and infectious immunology. We established a multidisciplinary research programme in 2009 to investigate Sudden and Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI) at the Tygerberg Forensic Pathology Mortuary and systematically screen multiple organs for infectious agents. In addition, epidemiological and environmental risk factors are also assessed to identify modifiable behaviour in the target population against a specific infant risk profile for the Western Cape.
