Christopher Gerner

University of Vienna, Austria

Biography :

Christopher Gerner studied biochemistry at the University of Vienna. Following postdoctoral work in the laboratories of Rolf Schulte-Hermann at the University of Vienna and Seamus Martin at the Trinity College in Dublin, he was appointed associate professor at the Medical University of Vienna in 2003. There, he headed a clinical proteomics laboratory. In 2012, he was appointed full professor of bioanalytics at the University of Vienna. He currently directs the Joint Metabolome Facility, which specializes in the analysis of clinical samples by mass spectrometry. Biochemical processes characteristic for chronic diseases such as inflammation, mitochondrial stress, and metabolic disorders are investigated applying multi-omics techniques covering xenobiotics, proteins, lipids, and metabolites. This toolbox is supplemented by phospho-proteomics focusing on signaling events. Furthermore, his laboratory has developed methods for metabolic phenotyping of humans using non-invasively collected sweat samples, providing insight into dynamic regulatory processes affecting the molecular composition of the interstitial fluid.
