Biography :

Dr Serena Barral is a Lecturer in the Developmental Neurosciences Department at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London. Her research focuses on human neurodevelopment, rare neurological disorders, and the development of advanced cellular and disease models to understand neurological disease and evaluate potential therapies. Dr. Barral’s research has a particular focus on neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders involving dopaminergic pathways. She has contributed extensively to research on dopamine transporter deficiency syndrome (DTDS), a rare inherited neurological disorder, including the development and application of patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models and gene-therapy approaches. Her work has helped advance understanding of the cellular mechanisms underlying dopamine dysfunction and has supported efforts toward precision and gene-based therapies for children affected by these disorders.
